Growing Your Own Teachers through RISE and Residents
Presented by Brad Brown, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, & Dr. Karla Swafford, Assistant Superintendent, from Hall County Schools.
RISE UP Program (Realizing Inspiring and Successful Educators Undergraduate Program)
- In Hall, we recruit Hall County high school seniors who are interested in the teaching profession. To qualify, they must be native Spanish speakers and a Hall County Graduate. Once they are accepted into the program, they are hired as part-time paraprofessionals and attend school full-time. They are assigned a mentor from the college and work directly with students in the schools. We pay for their tuition and books and they agree to teach in the Hall County Schools. Through this initiative, RISE graduates have their schooling paid for, graduate debt free, have money in their pocket and are guaranteed a job.
Teacher Residency Program
- College students who are in their final year and who would be student teaching are hired as the teacher of record. These candidates are the “rock stars” who were made to be teachers. They are assigned mentors at the school and college. Although this is our first year in full implementation, we are getting rave reviews from our principals. This program is becoming a great recruiting tool for our district.
