Tuesday, July 8 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm CST
Presented by Beverly Ozowara, Partner, and Stephen McLouglin, Partner, Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo, Cerritos, CA
New and emerging technology offers school districts several ways to bolster their school site security. However, security technology raises several legal issues, including privacy, due process, and free speech rights. Further, schools must also assess their current technology and security needs to determine what specific technology will provide the most efficient and effective security support. Finally, schools must also navigate funding and procurement issues associated with this new technology. This presentation will provide an overview of the current technologies available to schools to increase and support their facility security efforts, along with practical guidelines to help address the legal concerns associated with these technologies. We will also present a recommended plan to assess school sites to determine what specific technology can be used to increase security. Together, this discussion will help schools develop a plan to ensure their school sites both provide adequate security to protect students and staff while honoring the rights and concerns of all involved.
