Interactive Computer Interviewing System (ICIS) - Paraprofessional

This brand new interviewing tool utilizes the interviewing questions from AASPA’s Teacher of the Future publication in an interactive format to measure skills and knowledge of prospective candidates. Working with AASPA, Dr. Howard Ebmeier from the School of Education at the University of Kansas developed a computer-assisted interviewing process. This system, designed for use in K-12 schools, was developed through a comprehensive review of existing literature on teacher effectiveness, discussions with practitioners and their professional associations, and an examination of national commission reports. This interview system uses the power of a computer to allow the interviewer to focus on evaluating the candidate's responses while the computer tracks response patterns, suggests potential questions based on these response patterns, and constructs detailed summary reports to capture various aspects of the interview.

All the questions are grouped into four major themes:

Working with Others
Knowledge of Content
Knowledge of Teaching*
Knowledge of Students
*Knowledge of Teaching includes the areas of planning, delivering instruction, assessment, interactions with students, and classroom climate development.
As you ask candidates questions, the system allows you to rate a candidate’s answers based on three levels of responses. At the end of the interview, a report is created that shows the number of questions asked, the average, and the standard deviation for each theme as well as a weighted average and standard deviation for all questions asked during the interview. Thus you end up with very valuable empirical data allowing you to evaluate the candidate and compare them to other candidates.

Several options of the system can be customized based on the district’s preferences, including adding or substituting new questions, changing the number of questions presented, and adding the district’s logo and other graphics.

Also included with the system is a training module featuring video clips of sample responses. This allows you and your staff to learn how to determine which answers would be classified at which levels. The module is designed for both individual and group training.
